It All Begins Here

Using classic sewing techniques and traditional materials to give science and medicine a new voice.

Featured Projects

Anatomy of Sewing

This piece combines fabric, cardstock, and foam core board to deliver a 3D take on hand anatomy. This piece was the focal point in a poster that also highlighted the hand-sewn creations of my family.

Thorax Cross Section

This is a cross section of the thorax at approximately T8. Anatomical structures are captured in decorative machine stitching with classic pebble quilting around it.

3D textile brain

This image shows a textile healthy brain on a dark teal background. Its partner for this project, a brain shrunken from frontotemporal dementia, is displayed on an olive green background (click “See more details” to view both brains).

Rods & Cones

Here I used a color palette typically seen in H&E stained specimens to show rods and cones—the photoreceptor cells in our eyes.

Cell biology series

This series features a mitochondria, cell, and small intestinal epithelium tissue. These were crafted with quilting cotton batiks, decorative machine stitches, and beads.

Medullary Sponge Kidney - submitted cover art to JU Open Plus

JU Open Focus, an official journal of the American Urological Association, put out a call for articles for a special volume. I decided to reach out to their Publications contact to see about the process of submitting cover art—and here is my submission!

I decided to focus on medullary sponge kidney as an interesting anatomical variation, where small cysts form in the kidney. This is a congenital condition that most folks don’t know they have until they have a reason for imaging, which factors into the diagnosis.
